Olympics (2002) Day 6

Happy Valentine's Day!  We awoke to a blanket of new snow.  After exchanging V-day gifts and cards, we bundled up yet again for another day on the slopes.  By the time we left the house, all you could see were my eyes- I look like the kid in the malt o meal commercial!  It snowed lightly all morning as we made our way to Park City for snowboarding qualification matches.  Through security, on the bus, hike, hike, hike up the hill to Park City.  Into the venue- again
with the friendly people!  The whole experience is a cross between Up with People, Disneyland and MTV Spring Break.  Every venue has crankin' music during the runs- and there are videos between every run and event.  It is certainly a sensory experience!

I have decided to brave the porta potties for the first time.  Unfortunately, I forgot to note that they
were on a bit of a cant, and of course the floor is covered with ice- as I stepped in, luckily nearly avoided a potentially messy and embarrassing tumble, though it was touch and go for a second or two.  The qualifications were great- we cheered for everyone.  Especially those who fell, got up, and finished even though they knew they had no chance to win.  They won the crowd!  We can't wait to get back tomorrow to see the finals.  The top 16 qualified out of 30- the 17th person was only 1.5 seconds behind the leader. One and a half SECONDS.  Think about that.

Later, we go to dinner with Andy and Justyn.  One of Robert Redford's restaurants- what doesn't that guy do?  Anyway after dinner- shopping in Park City.  It is freezing, but people are everywhere walking around- there are lights in all the trees, jumbotrons on several corners with coverage of the games, and ice sculptures representing all of the sports.  Then, we are treated to fireworks and music at the top of the hill.  It's a perfect night.  Off to bed- and prep for our last day of Olympic adventures.
